Things to Do in Boston
For the best introduction to Boston’s colorful history walk along Freedom Trail following the 2.5 mile red-line in the sidewalks connecting historical sites. There are free self-guided audio tours and a free 90-minute guided tour led by National Park Service Rangers. Listen for the echoes of Paul Revere's famous cry, “The British are coming.”
If you are not up for long walks around the city, there are plenty of Boston city tours on wheels. Hop on Old Town Trolley Tours and whisk around town. Hop-off at sites of interest and hop-on a later trolley to continue your tour. Explore Boston by land and by sea on a Boston Duck, a restored amphibious WWII vehicle that cruises city streets and splashes into the harbor for a cruise along Boston’s waterfront.
Visit the USS Constitution, the oldest U.S. battleship still in service with active duty sailors as tour guides. Spend a few hours at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts or Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Take a break at the Boston Common or Boston Public Gardens. Pop over to Cambridge for a free tour of Harvard University. Boston is a sports fan’s Mecca. Cheer for the Boston Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins or New England Patriots. And, when walking, tours and sports works up an appetite, dig into a succulent lobster roll or a steaming bowl of rich clam “chowdah” at popular Boston restaurants.
In the unlikely event you run out of things to do in the city, take a New England day tour to Salem (the witch city), Cape Cod or Plymouth, the landing site of the Pilgrim’s Mayflower.
